What is dehydration?
Dehydration is simply your body not having as much water as it needs to function properly.
Causes of dehydration
There are many causes of dehydration such as excessive sweating, prolonged heat exposure, vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive alcohol consumption. All of these lead to decreased water stores in the body which can be classified as mild, moderate, or severe dehydration.
First signs of dehydration
Some of the first signs of dehydration are thirst, dry mouth, decreased urine output, increased heart rate (pulse), dry cool skin, headache, and muscle cramping. If not treated, severe dehydration can set in leading to worsening thirst, faster heart rate, dry skin, confusion, lethargy, rapid shallow breathing and fainting.
General Water Recommendations
The human body is mostly made of water therefore, when you are dehydrated it can affect multiple organ systems. Health authorities have recommended 8, 8 ounce glasses of water for adequate hydration levels. This ads up to two liters a day of water outside what is consumed in our food.
Those with active lifestyles who exercise, live in dry climates, or at altitude are just an example of those that will actually require more than this amount to stay hydrated. The stresses of daily life and the demands on our time can also limit our water intake as well.
